This crown embodies the republic, its citizens and democracy in action. The eagle holds in its talons both a sickle, a symbol of the peasantry, and a hammer, representing the working class. These elements represent a further development of the heraldic representation that was previously present in the imperial coat of arms with the imperial crown, sword/sceptre and orb. In 1945, the broken chains on the eagle's talons were added as a symbol of liberation from National Socialist rule. On the eagle's chest is the shield, a red shield with a silver crossbar. It is particularly noteworthy that the coat of arms is always shown free-floating and without a shield, which emphasizes its uniqueness and historical significance.
