Traditional flags are more than just fabric and embroidery - they stand for history, identity and cohesion within the club. Whether it's a shooting club, fire department, music club or young farmers' association - if you look after your club flag properly, you are preserving a valuable cultural asset. In this article, we will show you how to handle, store and care for your traditional flag correctly so that it remains in the best possible condition in the long term.

How to handle a traditional flag correctly

If possible, avoid rolling the flag during transportation and storage. Instead, fold the flag gently to avoid putting unnecessary strain on the embroidery and fabric. This will minimize the risk of tears or creases, especially with older or elaborately crafted flags.

If the flag gets wet, you need to act quickly and correctly:

  • Remove the rain cover immediately and dry it separately.

  • Fold the wet flag loosely - never roll it up!

  • Hang it up to dry in a well-ventilated room, as freely as possible and without direct contact with other surfaces.

  • Avoid standing moisture to prevent mold, mildew stains or loss of color.

Ideally, you should not let it get that far: Protect your traditional flag in advance with a suitable rain cover if rain is expected - or leave it in the clubhouse altogether in bad weather.

How to store your traditional flag correctly

Correct storage is crucial for the lifespan of your club flag. Light, moisture and temperature fluctuations are the flag's biggest enemies. You should therefore store it

  • in a dark, dry and well-ventilated place,

  • protected from direct sunlight and even moonlight, as this can also fade the colors over time,

  • lying in a flag case - if none is available, wrap the flag in a white cloth or a breathable cotton protective cover. Avoid synthetic fabrics, as these could react chemically with the fabric.

Extra tip: A piece of PINE WOOD in the flag cabinet is ideal as moth protection.

Caring for a traditional flag - what you should know

Many people make a mistake here, because traditional flags must not be washed or dry-cleaned. Machine washing, hand washing or cleaning with solvents will damage the fine materials - especially gold embroidery, silk or handmade details.

Have your traditional flag cleaned and refreshed regularly by a specialist company such as FAHNENGÄRTNER. These specialists remove dust, gently smooth out creases and check the flag for any signs of damage. This keeps it visually appealing and ready for use - without risk.

Conclusion: With the right care, your traditional flag will remain a real gem

Whether for festive occasions, parades or anniversaries - a well-maintained traditional flag makes a lasting impression. With the right handling, proper storage and professional care by experts , you can significantly extend the life of your club flag.

Take care - and your flag will serve as a proud symbol of your club for many generations to come.
