Flags
Technically, there is no difference - both terms refer to a vertical flag on a pole (with or without a boom) that is attached to the side of the pole. "Vertical hoist flag" is the technical or neutral term, while "portrait flag" comes from everyday language and is derived from the sound of the flag in the wind.
- In Germany , "Hissfahne Hochformat" is the common standard - especially in B2B, in online stores and in official usage.
- In Austria, on the other hand, "portrait flag" is used much more frequently - also in sales and marketing.
What other spellings are common?
In addition to the main terms, there are variants such as "vertical format flag", "vertical format flag", "portrait format flag" or "vertical flag". These are often used in addition.
Differentiation from the banner flag:
The portrait flag or vertical format hoist flag should not be confused with the banner flag. The banner flag is an older form of flag and is attached to the center of the pole using a crossbar.

Beachflags and sailing flags
The suitability of a Beachflags variant or size depends on the intended use and environment. XS and S sizes are ideal for indoor events or limited outdoor areas where subtle but effective advertising is required. M and L sizes, on the other hand, maximize visibility at outdoor events or in spacious indoor areas.
Dropflags are particularly appealing for trade fairs and exhibitions due to their teardrop-shaped appearance and compact size, while poleflags impress with their traditional rectangular shape and flexibility in all contexts.

Yes, there are special reflectors or reflective elements for recognition and high visibility vests. Common variants are
- Reflective strips - silver strips made of retroreflective material, as known from high-visibility vests
- Iron-on reflectors - for retrofitting onto fabric
- Velcro reflectors - removable and interchangeable
- Reflective patches or logos
- Reflective films for DIY solutions
- LED reflective combinations for particularly poor visibility
Reflectors are required depending on the intended use. Reflectors are not required for normal sporting events or for use as group identification, e.g. at ski schools etc. Reflectors are mainly required when the identification vest is used as a high visibility vest or in road traffic. There are separate standards for this.
