Processional flags are special church flags and have a firm place in the religious annual cycle. Apart from religious motifs, they also have their own shape, which has been preserved over the centuries. Vexillum or gonfalon (gonfanon) are other names for this special type of flag that describe its shape. They are rectangular flags in the shape of a banner (which was used as a battle flag in the Middle Ages), attached to a crossbar and supported by a central pole. Church or processional flags can be several meters high, making them visible from afar. Carrying a flag of this size requires a great deal of strength and skill, as well as helpers who use ropes to hold the flag in place.
Processional flags are also used in a smaller format, for example in a simple version at the roadside at a bishop's reception.
