The FAHNENGÄRTNER story

Fahnen-Gärtner GmbH has been in existence for several decades and has been run as a family business since it was founded in 1945 - now in the second generation of the Heedegen family.

In the early years, no flags were printed and sewn at the Mittersill site, but the company founders Anna and Arnold Gärtner (after whom the company is named) produced soft toys and other small items. However, the production of flags was not long in coming and began in the 1950s. The changes in tourism and the increasing number of holidaymakers in Austria gave Arnold Gärtner the idea of the Zimmer Frei flag, which is still used by many accommodation establishments today and is one of FAHNENGÄRTNER's top products.

The 1970s saw an important and significant turning point in the company. Volker Heerdegen took over the company from Anna and Arnold Gärtner as Managing Director in 1976.

Even after the takeover, the production and products were constantly expanded, enlarged and perfected, so that the next takeover by his son Gerald Heerdegen in 2005 could take place without any problems. In keeping with the tradition of innovation, flag production was further improved and, above all, digitalized. Thanks to the constant improvement of production, printing and products, the company was able to assert itself on the flag market and is still the largest flag manufacturer in Austria.
